Teaching My Students all About Community Heroes

Today I felt a bit nervous as it was my day to teach my Social Studies lesson. I planned a lesson for my second grade around community heroes. The students were so excited to learn and take a closer look into the different community jobs. The students were so engaged throughout the lesson and were excited to share their ideas on real life interactions they've had with certain community heroes. Everyone was participating, even the students who normally keep to themselves. I was happy to see them all involved in the lesson and it made me less nervous. I was able to bring in some real life props to show the students and they really seemed to enjoy them. They asked questions about the items and were shocked to find out I had a real life police uniform on hand. My MT also gave me some great feedback and enjoyed my lesson as well.

The students also took an intense math test which a few students really seemed to struggle with. I was asked to work alongside a student who is ADHD and I really struggled to get him to work. It was like pulling teeth, it was not fun at all. I really had to pull out all kinds of tricks just to get him to write his answers down. This students usually shuts down towards the end of the school day so I knew it would be an issue getting him to work but I didn't think it would be this hard. With a lot of persistence from me, I got him to complete the test. Although I didn't enjoy dealing with his stubbornness, I'm glad I get to work with him so I know what to expect when I am a teacher in my own classroom. Overall, it was a great day and I'm excited to see what I come up with for my science lesson plan next week.
