Base Ten Blocks and Hallway Conversations-Sylvia Bradshaw

October 7, 2021

Sylvia L. Bradshaw

Today was an interesting day.  As usual, I was super excited to see the kids in the hallway before class.  The new student from last week seems to have settled in very nicely.  She is still very quiet, but I can tell that she has quickly learned the rules and the procedures of the classroom.  One student was having a particularly hard day in the classroom.  He was being very disruptive in class by falling out of his seat, tapping his pencil on this desk, yelling out answers and moaning and groaning about assignments he didn't want to do. My MT ignored the behavior for the most part and just continued to remind him that he was making bad choices and what the consequences would be for the types of decisions he was making.  At one point during my MT's lesson the student was completely disengaged and threw his worksheet on the floor and had his head on the table.  I went over to try and encourage his to pick up the paper and continue to work with the rest of the class and he started to cry.  I asked him if he wanted to go outside the room to talk and that is what we did.  I must say that my heart was bleeding for him, I just tried to say some words that I thought could get him out of the funk he was in.  When we entered the classroom, he was able to complete his work and then it was time for gym.  When my MT and I returned from taking them to gym, I then realized that I may have overstepped.  I was told that this type of behavior is routine for the student and that at this point my MT is just trying to reenforce the positive behavior and not the negative.  I guess that for the first couple weeks my MT was pulling the student into the hallway as well and having conversations and then she noticed that he was taking advantage of her kindness.  Lesson learned, I'm only  in the class one day a week and I'll make sure not to make that mistake again.

On a brighter note, I was able to work one on one with a student and use the base ten blocks.  The students worked on a three problems together as a class and were required to do the last problem on the page as an exit ticket.  There were about five students in the class that needed to some help on their work and my MT asked if I would be able to pull one of them to the side and work one on one.  I was happy to help and even more excited that I was able to use the math manipulatives to help her to understand the concept.  I was happy to see that the student actual gained some understanding by using the base ten blocks.  I hope that some of the strategies we went over together will help her in the future.

On a side note, I found out that I'm actually older than the grandmother of one of the students in my class 😂
