Thursday was a great day! It was spirit week, so I participated with the students and staff by wearing the school colors and jeans. If my students behave a certain amount of days they get sprinkles added to their donut on smart board. This week they were able to completely fill the donut with sprinkles so they earned a movie day. On top of the movie day, we had an assembly with the Crete- Monee fire fighters. We got to go outside and see the fire truck and ambulance which was super cool. The students were super intrigued the entire and asked looks of questions to the fire fighters. Before we went to the assembly my teacher mentor made sure to let the students know to only ask questions and not say comments. I loved how she mentioned this because often 1st graders just want to tell stories constantly. After the assembly the rest of the day we worked very hard to complete phonics, math, writing, and spelling so we could use the other half for the movie. As usual, I took the lead on morning opener and yellow book! I am getting very comfortable with yellow book. At first I was SO nervous about doing it because it seems complicated but the more you do it the more confident you get with it.
I supported a group of students struggling with math at the back table. We worked on subtracting by 9's through number bonds. Math isn't my strong subject so I really like getting time to work with students on because as much as i am helping them they are also helping me by getting me prepared for stuff like this. . I clipped my first student down as well. My teacher mentor kept telling me repeatedly that I need to "crack the whip" so that's exactly what I did. I feel like this needed to happen anyways for the students to take me more seriously. The students really enjoyed the movie and my teacher mentor even brought in popcorn for them to eat during the movie. During the movie we were surprised with the fire alarm going off. It was a false alarm thank goodness, but it was good to see the schools and classes procedure when there is a fire drill. Overall, it was a great day filled with lots of fun! Up next, my second lesson plan! Wish me luck :)
